KU VC calls for change in national mindset
Karachi:The Vice-Chancellor (VC)of the University of Karachi (KU), Professor Dr Pirzada Qasim Raza Siddiqui, on Sunday called for changing the national mindset as it was the only way to achieve the nation’s destiny.
Speaking at a programme for the Independence Day celebrations at the KU, the VC said that a change had taken place and a change of mindset was also taking place among them.
He opined that the change of mindset was a difficult task but “we could foresee a bright future for Pakistan through this change among our young generation”.
The people who participated in the movement for the creation of Pakistan were selfless leaders, he further said. The father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, in his legal profession, charged a heavy fee but when he became associated with the movement for the creation of Pakistan he dedicated his properties to educational institutes, he added. “We can make Pakistan’s future bright by making such leaders our role model. This country is our identity and biggest assets. We have to change our thinking and the role of youth is important in this regard.”
Youth, he said, needed leadership. However, “our youth possess knowledge and conscience and have determination too,” the VC said. He also hoisted the national flag in front of the new administrative building of KU at 10am and the faculty members and non-teaching staff were also present on the occasion.
The registrar, KU, Professor M. Kaleem Raza Khan hosted the Independence Day function while Professor Dr Hassam Uddin Mansoori prayed for the success, solidarity, stability and prosperity of the country. The news.

Book on G.M. Syed’s philosophy launched
KARACHI, Aug 13: Speakers clarified the misconceptions regarding Sindh’s famous politician G.M. Syed and touched on his philosophy of life at the launch of the book Fikr-i-G.M. Syed Aur Aaj Ka Pakistan by Abdul Khaliq Junejo at the PMA House on Friday.
The book is an Urdu translation of three of the politician’s known speeches.
Dr Jaffer Ahmed, who presided over the event, read out a few excerpts from the preface. He said two different behaviours and attitudes vis-Ã -vis the state’s functioning had existed from the time Pakistan came into being. The first (which had turned into an ideological paradigm) was to do with a strong centralised system, which was usually considered necessary for the country’s unity and progress. Those who held this view often used religion and patriotism to support their standpoint. He said in 1951 no less than 32 religious scholars came up with a programme in favour of that kind of rule, despite the fact that East Pakistan was also part of the country at that time. They were doing so in a country which was multiethnic and multilingual.
Dr Ahmed said the other view that ran parallel to the first one was in favour of provincial and regional autonomy.
The Centre often labelled those who held that view as separatists. He said G.M. Syed was unfortunately one of those politicians who after partition became a victim of the Muslim League’s wrath and was not only ignored in the national discourse but was
also dubbed as a ‘negative force’. Such politicians were often accused of something that they never committed or believed in.
He said the book contained some predictions made by G.M. Syed which were now proving true. In the book, he’s seen welcoming those who’d migrated from India to Pakistan and in a speech delivered in Vienna in 1952 he condemned the western powers for adopting the policy of supporting religious forces to counter communism. G.M. Syed had pointed out that if the West continued doing that, the religious extremists and regressive forces would take advantage of the situation and reach the corridors of power — something that later happened.
Prof Dr Tauseef Ahmed said time had proved G.M. Syed right on the things that he disagreed with Mr Jinnah. It was in 1946 that he first took issue with Mr Jinnah and his ‘confederation’ approach was not liked by the Muslim League. He said his address at the formation of the Pakistan People’s Organisation indicated that G.M. Syed wished for a state where there’d be a socialist system, where there’d be protection of everybody’s basic rights.
Columnist Muqtada Mansoor, Amanullah Shaikh,Dr Habib Soomro and Ms Saliha also spoke.Dawn.

Pakistan breaks world record of most people-singing national anthem
KARACHI: Pakistan achieved the world record for most people singing a national anthem simultaneously late Saturday night when 5,857 Pakistanis chanted the national anthem here at the Defence Stadium in connection with the Independence Day celebrations. The most noteworthy part of the achievement was that the event was arranged by two jingoistic youngsters, Abid Beli and Waqas Pai with a vigorous campaign on social and digital media without any sponsorship or support from the public or private sector. People along with their families and friends started gathering at the designated venue at about 10pm. Rangers, police and scout personnel surrounded the stadium, while volunteers organised the traffic and guided people. The excited crowd chanted slogans as they filled the ground. Youngsters with face paint and wristbands of national colours kept waving the Pakistani flag. Distinguished in the parade of national flags, was a 40-metre national flag held by youngsters. Renowned television host, entrepreneur and intellectualist Faisal Qureshi was hosting the event. Addressing the participants of the ceremony Beli the main organiser congratulated the people for breaking the world record of most people singing the national anthem. Later while talking to Daily Times he said that the idea was put forth by his associate Pai. He said that the objective behind organising the event was to motivate Pakistani youth to play their due role in the betterment of society. He was of the view that the bomb blasts across the country including the attack on General Headquarter (GHQ) and Abbottabad operation were the events that compelled the youth to gather up and do something for their country. Beli further said that earlier, India held the record for most people singing the national anthem but he said, it was a flaw as the Indians had sung ‘Vande Mataram’, which is not their national anthem. He further said that they wrote to the concerned authorities in this regard and in response the title was repealed and awarded to Philippines, where 5,248 students, staff, faculty and alumni of MSU-IIT sang ‘Lupang Hinirang’ Philippines’ national anthem on Sept 1, 2009. To a question he said that the behaviour of federal and provincial government was regrettable, as they did not permit the event to be organised at Ibn-e-Qasim Park on the pretext of security concerns. He said that political parties are provided with the permission of taking out rallies and large public meetings, but the government did not support citizens for a noble cause. Pai said not to him but for the entire nation it was a great achievement particularly when the country is facing deteriorating situation. He applauded the fervour of people, who gathered despite of rains, strike and other hurdles. He said that the cost of the event was about Rs 0.7 million which was contributed by the organisers and their friends. Only a minor sponsorship was offered at the eleventh hour, he added. He also appreciated the role of Defence Housing Authority, who provided them the venue without any cost. “Now we are planning to improve the record in upcoming years, beside forming other records. In this regard we would announce soon another event on Quaid-e-Azam day,” a fervent Pai said. Renowned politician Marvi Memon was also present on the occasion. She said that in 1947 Muslims of the sub-continent had earned their freedom and now they are free but yet to gain the real liberty. She appealed the masses to unite for the betterment and progress of the country. Captain Wasi, who was freed along with his ship crew after months-long captivity by the Somali pirates, was present on the occasion along with his daughter Laila Wasi. Addressing the ceremony, he said that disasters and tragedies have always encouraged nations, particularly Muslims to unite. In 1940s miseries of the Muslims of sub-continent encouraged them to fight for their freedom. Today, we are facing a number of problems again and the nation will unite soon as this is an opportunity to shun the differences, he added. Laila Wasi, a student of grade 6, while talking to Daily Times said that she wanted to see the metropolis becoming the city of peace. She appealed the entire nation to stand united. In the end, thousands of people sang the national anthem, breaking the previous records. Now the tickets’ record, photos and video evidences will be sent to the Guinness Book of World Record authorities as a formality for awarding the record to Pakistan. asad farooq.Daily Times.

PU security measures seemed `uncalled for
AERIAL firing incidents in the past couple of weeks have frightened the Punjab University administration that it felt compelled to sack the chief security officer and gave varsity`s security charge to Vice-Chancellor`s Honorary Adviser Col (retired) Ikramullah.
Col Ikramullah made his presence felt, particularly among journalists, when he `unnecessarily` beefed up security in and around Faisal Auditorium on the New Campus, where BA/BSc annual examination`s six top position holders had been invited to attend the awards-distribution ceremony on Friday.
The security measures seemed `uncalled for`, especially when no VVIP or dignitary was to chair the ceremony. The governor/chancellor as well as the chief minister had already declined to accept the varsity`s invitation. Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran was the chief guest on the occasion.
The PU administration had issued `strict` instructions to journalists to contact the PRO`s office and get their security passes to reach the venue. The vehicular movement had been blocked on all roads leading to the auditorium. While the varsity guards were performing their duties to restrict vehicular movement, some gun-toting guards were seen mounted on rooftops of the IER building adjacent to the auditorium.
Furthermore, cell phone jammers had been installed at the venue that eventually blocked mobile phone operations, perturbing the news channel reporters who had to go out of the auditorium to report the results to their channels.
Besides six position holders, their parents and teachers, journalists and a few faculty members attended the ceremony.
Various faculty members also noted the `uncalled for` security measures and said that such steps resulted in needless confusion and inconvenience. “We hope that the new chief security officer will be able to check the incidence of firing and motorcycle theft on the university campuses,” one of the teachers said.Dawn.

Campuses reopen today
LAHORE public sector educational institutions across the province will reopen after annual summer vacation on Monday (today).
Though most of the private institutions will reopen in September after Eidul Fitr, a large number of private schools follow the government schedule. The Punjab government had announced reopening of schools on August 15. There were widespread speculations that the government might extend the summer break on the pressing demand of students, their parents and teachers till September, however, this could not happen.
It is pertinent to mention here that Punjab School Education Department had also opposed any move to extend the annual summer vacation in a summary moved to the Punjab chief minister.
The department had informed the CM that if the summer break was extended, the schools would be unable to complete academic year of 210 days which was mandatory under education calendar of the Punjab government. The Schools Department officials argued that there was no reason to extend summer break, adding that in Sindh province where weather was slightly hot as compared to Punjab, the schools had already opened after summer vacation on August 1. They also argue that the private schools not following the government schedule would face problems in connection with completion of 210 academic days as per the education calendar.
According to sources in the department, a controversy was likely to erupt over the summer vacation schedule as many private schools would not reopen on August 15. They informed that the department had not chalked out any plan to enforce the government’s notification.
EDO Education Lahore Pervaiz Akhtar, confirming reopening of schools from August 15 (today), said it was unfortunate that people were spreading rumours that the government had extended the summer vacation. The news.
Girl students – ‘harbinger of change’
FOR the past many years, the girl students are stamping their authority in pursuing education as well as showing results that are far better than boys` in major examinations being conducted by boards and universities.
Besides grabbing almost all top positions in examinations – with the exception of results where positions are announced separately among boys and girls – the girl students are also showing better pass percentages. Girls sometimes are posting double the pass percentages as compared to those obtained by boys.
In the BA/BSc annual examination results declared last Friday, girls` pass percentage stood at 40.48 while only 20.84 per cent boys could earn the graduation degree. In humanities, girls` and boys` pass percentages stood at 38 and 19.25, respectively. In science group, boys showed 26.49 pass percentage, while girls posted more than double — 55.91 — pass percentage.
Besides showing that girls are better learners and hard workers, the results also reflect that a larger number of girls are joining higher education institutions on merit. Overall in BA/BSc, only 1,773 boys bagged first division against 10,023 girls. In second division, there are only 7,322 boys against 28,995 girls.
Over the years, a debate is going on in Punjab University regarding ever-growing ratio of girls joining this co-education institution. People believe that this situation will soon emerge as a social problem, when society will have more qualified and educated girls than boys, who culturally are the breadwinners of their families.
This situation eventually led to the conduct of two research studies in the Punjab University that are trying to peep into the social issues when girls will be more educated than boys in the society; and the factors behind gender differences in pursuance of higher education.
PU Applied Psychology Department chairperson Dr Rukhsana Kausar and lecturer Shehnila Tariq, who are conducting the second study, came up with initial findings and shared with the journalists.
Stating that they are interviewing masters` level students, parents and teachers teaching at secondary school, intermediate and graduation levels in public sector institutions, Dr Kausar said a majority of survey participants attributed boys` non-pursuance of higher education to their personal habits as well as irresponsible and careless attitudes. The survey suggested that boys showed lack of interest in studies owing to poor previous academic performance, excessive autonomy and frequent use of technology.
Dr Kausar said the survey also revealed that there were some institutional factors that prevented students from developing interest in seeking education. All stakeholders say that boys are getting non-conducive institutional environment. Teachers` attitude is not friendly and boys are confronted with boring ways of teaching coupled with punishments and penalties.
On the other hand, the stakeholders also observed that family and future concerns also held students back from seeking higher education in the first place. With poor economic backgrounds, the parents are compelling their sons to join the workforce – technical or even non-technical – and earn some money to keep the family`s day-to-day affairs running. Boys generally stop pursuing higher education and either look for technical education or start doing low-income jobs. “The parents do not realise that the low-income jobs at the cost of higher education destroy the quality of their sons` lives, who remain trapped in making their both ends meet throughout their lives,” she observed.
Referring to girls` willingness in pursuance of higher education, the researchers said that a majority of those surveyed said that girls` better study habits, interest in studies, previous academic performance, commitment and hard work led to their better results in examinations. A sense of competitiveness among girls was reported to be the major reason for their commitment to seeking higher education.
Dr Kausar suggested that the government must assess the role of boys` colleges in public sector and improve them on a war footing to enable boys to seek quality education with interest and then compete and excel in the outer world to lead better lives.Dawn.

PAC objects to PR schools lease, underpass
LAHORE, Aug 14: The National Assembly’s Public Accounts Committee on Railways has taken a strong exception to construction of an underpass and leasing out educational institutions for ‘nominal amount’ by the department.
Chairperson Yasmeen Rehman presided over a committee meeting held at the PR headquarters here on Saturday to discuss some 45 audit paras pertaining to the period between 2004 and 2007. Five paras were settled while the remaining were kept pending by the committee.
Terming the Rs18.95 million spent on the construction of an underpass at Sangla Hills ‘unjustified expenditure’ and the schools lease amount nominal, the committee members said no one would be allowed to misuse the railways assets in future.
Comprising Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Sardar Ahmad Zafar and Riaz Fatyana, the committee members were unanimous that the matter should be thoroughly probed into when informed that a former railways minister, Chaudhry Barjis Tahir, had ordered the underpass’ construction.
Railways senior officers had no answer when Ms Rehman asked them as to who authorised the PR to construct underpasses. The amount spent on these underpasses could have been utilised to execute some other projects that would have been beneficial for the railways, she commented.
Regarding leasing out 19 railways’ schools, the committee was informed that the step was taken to ‘improve quality of education’ and ‘reduce financial burden of the organisation’.
The audit report for 2004-05 pointed out that each leased out school had a total area of 81,418 square feet, with covered area of 21,237 sq ft, on an average. The institutions were leased out to M/s Educational Services Limited (ESL) in 2001 for a nominal amount of Rs5,000 per school per month. Ironically, the ESL rented out only canteens of three schools located in Lahore at an average monthly rent of Rs9,167 — around double the total lease amount — besides receiving the security deposit of Rs123,333 for each canteen.
The PAC also took serious note of the absence of the railways property and land director from the meeting and directed the general manager to seek an explanation from the officer in this regard.
Other paras discussed by the committee pertained to non-recovery of Rs0.764 million rent from a firm, loss of Rs11.888 million incurred due to procurement of defective material and resultant damage to locomotives during trial, besides dead inventories valuing Rs34.67 million due to unnecessary purchase of material.
The PAC also asked the railways administration to make the tender process more transparent.
To a question, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq said that the PAC had so far recovered Rs165 billion misappropriated during previous years.Dawn.
Youths make most of Independence Day freedom
Karachi:As the clock went past midnight, crackers and gunshots blew in unison to mark the 64th Independence Day of the country with the same fervor that grips the people of the city every year, save for the nagging discontent that the exclusive holiday of August 14 was swallowed up by a Sunday.
But people across the city didn’t let the discontent spill over their marked patterns of fanfare that usually makes August 14 a special day. The day began with fluttering flags, ear-splitting roars of cracked silencers of motorbikes and the annual pledge to break speed limits.
Traffic was comparatively sparse on the roads as was expected. To make the day distinct from an ordinary Sunday and the pleasant weather provided, people thronged parks, museums and the national zoo to commemorate the birthday day of their beloved country. However, the turnaround was relatively low—the reason is being attributed to Ramazan.
But many families molded the occasion according to the mood of the month and threw Iftar parties to gather family and friends.
“My uncle called a ‘one-dish’ Iftar party today on the occasion of the Independence Day. I made only one item and ran. The party saved me a lot of work,” said Yasmeen Ghauri, a housewife, with a grin.
But Ramazan seems to have failed to deter the young from celebrating the special day from the way they do. Convoys of bikes roared past many areas of Karachi, abusing the ear-drums of residents. Despite the ban on pillion riding, young men heedless of the law hounded the roads of Karachi with absolute frivolity.
Dolled up young girls and cracker-hurling kids tattooed Pakistani flags on their cheeks and milled around their apartment blocks, and when tired, sat at home watching themed shows on the occasion.
There is a general feeling that this year Ramazan has taken a lot of froth out of the celebrations of August 14. One wonders whether it is only Ramazan or the situation of the city coupled with inflation in the holy month that is draining the froth out of everyone in the city. The news.

Young Doctors Association strike
ISLAMABAD: The administration of Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has adopted a lethargic attitude in convincing the medical and non-medical staff to restart health care services to the patients.
Several members of medical and non-medical associations of the hospital blamed that the hospital administration is least interested in resolution of their long-standing issues due to which they stopped working.
‘The deadlock is from the administration side as we are waiting for positive response from the Executive Director PIMS but he is not willing to hold meeting with us,’ spokesman of All Pakistan non-medical health employees association, Syed Manzar Abbas Naqvi said while talking to APP on Thursday.
He said that two main bodies of medical and non medical staff of the hospital like Young Doctors Association (YDA) and All non medical health employees association are ready to start delivery of services to the patients in the Holy month of Ramdan, however, the hospital administration is reluctant to play its due role in restoration of medical services for patients.
Manzar Abbas Naqvi said, ‘We even conveyed the administration that we are ready to accept the new services structure but they didn’t make any contact with us in this regard.’
He said that the non-medical staff unlocked the administration section today so that high officials can start their work, however, they stayed away from their offices despite knowing the fact of patients’ sufferings.
He said that it has been decided that both medical and non-medical staff of the hospital will follow a joint plan of action in any way. He added all workers are united regarding the resolution of their problems and asked the authorities concerned to resolve their problems as early as possible.
President of Young Doctors Association, Islamabad Chapter Dr. Sajid Abbasi said it seems the hospital administration is unwilling to resolve theproblems of medical practitioners who are facing several hardships.
He said their demands are genuine and urged to resolve their demands as early as possible so that doctors could do their job with peace of mind.
He said the authority concerned had announced the new career structure for health personnel serving in the government institutions and related organizations, but it still failed to implement the decision, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that the non-medical staff of PIMS also joined the on-going protest of Young Doctors Association and announced to start joint efforts for the resolution of their problems.
In order to press the authorities to accept their demands, YDA, Non-Medical Association, PIMS Nursing Association and Para-medical Association held a series of protests in the hospital. app.
IIUI celebrates 64th Independence Day
ISLAMABAD: Speakers at a programme in connection with 64th Independence Day in International Islamic University (IIU) on Thursday urged to root out terrorism and corruption from the country and promote the concept of welfare state.
IIU Rector Prof Fateh Malik presided over the ceremony while Director General of Dawah Academy Professor Dr Sahibzada Sajidur Rehman was the chief guest on the occasion.
Malik said that Pakistan was our identity and ‘we are proud to be Pakistanis’.
Professor Malik added that there was no importance of number game in building the ideology of nations, but the actual importance was of culture and traditions.
He said Pakistan came into being to provide a separate state to the Muslims where they could practice their religious norms and values with dignity.
Prof Malik said that the greatest challenges faced by the Pakistan were terrorism, fanaticism, corruption, economic collapse, and deprivation of nationalities living in the backward federating units and socio-economic injustices and disparities. But these were continuously being ignored or tackled half-heartedly, said Prof Malik.
He added that bread and butter was also a basic reason for creation of Pakistan as if a person struggles for bread and butter, it has no harm for his or her religion. Islam recognizes basic needs of human beings and surely bread and butter are of this kind.
IIU President Dr Mumtaz Ahmad said that no doubt Pakistanis are facing inflation, corruption, power shortages and terrorism but we have learned at every stage how to survive, and this was the strong point necessary for the survival of any nation.
He strongly condemned the debates of `failure state about Pakistan’ by some critiques and writers in the media. Ahmad said that ideology of Pakistan was being questioned by vested interests. Pakistan was established to safeguard rights of Muslims and present situation of Muslims in India is an evidence of justification of Pakistan.
Dr Sajidur Rehman said that Pakistan was the objective of the struggle of all the Muslims of sub-continent, which was historically revealed to the Muslims from the past. He added that according to Muslims the term “nation” is different from others and this was the basic reason why the Muslims of sub-continent strived for a separate country.Daily Times.
Vibrancy of Pashtuns always neglected in history books
Islamabad:The vibrancy of Pashtun past has always remained a neglected area in the history books, as most of these books were written by outsiders and lack perspective from the locals.
These views were shared by Dr. Robert Nichol, American historian and author of two books on Pashtun nation in a lecture titled ‘Fact, Narrative and True Histories: Presenting the Pashtun Past.’ The lecture was organised by the Pakistan-US Alumni.
Dr. Nichol is a graduate from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of South Asia Regional Studies. He has learned Persian, Pashtu and Urdu and read widely in the literature of his period in these languages as well as thoroughly investigating British archival material in Peshawar, Lahore, New Delhi and London.
He said that available material on the history of Pashtuns has presented a distorted picture of the nation that is actually rich in culture, language, literature and agriculture. He said that Peshawar Valley has always been connected to all the regions in Asia and was the route of great conquerors. “The history written at that time was narrated according to the perspective of those who came to rule these areas,” said Dr. Nichol.
He said that Pashtun populations of today’s Pakistan and the Peshawar region have always participated within the great historical flows of wider inter-regional and world history. “This area has never been an isolated place of isolated people. Participation in these flows, in turn, has meant that Pashtun identity has not been of an unchanging, primordial character,” he said.
Nichol described how two centuries of agricultural migration into northern India meant that a Pashtun community of around one hundred thousand was already present when the British began asserting hegemony over the area in the late eighteenth century. “Historically, the Pashtun population has circulated within and outside the region to seek opportunities.” He said that almost half of the labour from Pakistan in the Gulf region is Pashtun. “These Pashtuns are contributing millions of rupees in the Pakistan’s economy in the form of remittances,” he said after a certain period, these migrants come back to their native towns, which in turn contribute in the uplift of these areas.
Nichols believed that recent public opinion has not viewed the Pashtuns kindly. Residing primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Pashtuns have gained notoriety in the west through their association with al-Qaeda and Taliban. Nevertheless, Nichols believes that the Pashtuns have for centuries been anything, but a hidebound, insular community. The news.

O and A level students meet destiny
Karachi The results of O and A level Cambridge International Examinations for the session May/June 2011 have been released by the CIE on Thursday.
In a statement, Rakhshanda Khushal, senior school development manager for the CIE Pakistan, said: “Our congratulations go to all Cambridge students in Pakistan. Your achievements are well-deserved and your work is of a high standard.”
With bated breaths, private candidates in Pakistan began logging into the CIE’s designated website for results, since the time of Sehri to find out the ultimate outcome of their years of hard work, but the sudden load of traffic on the website made the landing page painstakingly slow, which, by the account of many students, remained stagnated for a couple of hours, only to add to the tension of the restless students.
“Those were the most anxious hours I ever dealt with. I’ve never pressed the F5 button so many times in my whole life! ” exclaimed Obaid Hashmi, who appeared in O Level exams in this session as a private candidate.
However, school candidates had a different story to share. They went to school, with their fingers crossed, and some of them prayed all night long. Tooba Gufran, an A Level student, confided that she kept asking her family to make themselves useful and pray for her results. “I got three Bs and I am happy about it,” she said.
While schools have not compiled their final result lists as yet, teachers are generally happy with the results this year. “There is a marked improvement in the performance of my students this year. Fifty percent of my students got As in O Level, where last year it was 43 percent,” said Mohammed Jonaid Haq, an accounting teacher at a private school.
The official grade lists of schools are in the process of compilation and will be announced in a day or two. Nevertheless, given the accounts of teachers and students, it can be safely said that, like every year, the results of this session came as expected, without any major surprises. As one teacher put it, “In O/A exams it’s very simple; if you work hard you get your reward. You reap what you sow.”The news.

Colleges charge at will for admission forms
LAHORE:THE Punjab government’s indifferent attitude towards admissions to government and private colleges has led to the sale of admission forms and prospectus at exorbitant rates.
The sale of admission-related material at un-controlled prices has been greatly irking students and their parents who have demanded the government to take notice of the situation and stop this “fleecing” in the name of education.
A comparison of prospectus prices of different educational institutes clearly shows that there is no uniformity in connection with the prices of prospectus of government colleges and universities offering intermediate classes. Similarly, private institutes are also taking full advantage of the situation and selling prospectus at higher rates, causing troubles for students and their parents. The Govt College of Home Economics is selling its prospectus at Rs 300 besides Rs 20 is being charged for a charity ticket. The Government College University (GCU) is selling its prospectus for intermediate at Rs 200 only while the Lahore College for Women University (LCWU) is charging Rs 300 with Rs 25 ticket. Similarly, Rs 75 to Rs 200 are being charged by a number of colleges, including the Govt MAO College, Govt College of Science, Govt Islamia College, and Govt College for Women, Cooper Road, for admission to intermediate classes.
It is pertinent to mention here that most of the private colleges and universities, offering intermediate level education, have been charging minimum Rs 500 for prospectus and admission forms, etc. A citizen complained that prospectus of the Govt College of Home Economics did not mention its price, adding that at least the government should ensure that all institutions print prices of admission forms and prospectus. It is generally observed that students usually apply for admission to more than one college with an aim to securing admission at any of these while there are also those who apply in more than one discipline which shows how
much such students have to spend on admission related documents. The news.
SSC Result 2011 and Errors
LAHORE, Aug 7: While the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education has just sent the result cards to candidates, long queues are seen at board offices as the candidates are coming for the rectification of their results.
Most candidates are coming with the apprehension that the “computer mistakes” might have played havoc with their future.
Though a large number of candidates are applying for re-checking of their papers and posting of marks on their result cards, the board officials admit that around 200 candidates are daily visiting and applying for re-checking of their scripts. So far, around 1,000 candidates have applied for re-checking.
Candidates told Dawn that there were probably computer reading mistakes as those earning A and A+ grades were scoring zero, 10 or 12 marks in other papers.
“This situation created doubts in the minds of students and they are applying for re-checking in large numbers,” a candidate standing in the queue said.
Another candidate said a student was supposed to pay a fee of Rs700 per paper re-checking and many a students would not be able to apply for re-checking for not having spare money.
A board official told Dawn that in 30 per cent cases, wrong marks had been posted on result cards. He said the board itself was also working on rectification of results that went wrong due to optical reading problems.
Meanwhile, the board has also developed a proforma and given to candidates, who have got zero mark posted on their result cards, for the rectification of their results. A candidate suggested that the board administration must counter-check the results and correct result cards on its own.
When contacted, BISE controller of examinations Prof Manzurul Hassan Niazi said the computerised system was in its initial phases. “Wherever, the board has found errors, it has rectified and printed result cards afterwards.” He said the results were uploaded soon after the declaration of results on Tuesday morning and had started printing result cards after comparing with the results available on hard copy.
Answering a question, he admitted that there were cases, where objective questions’ marks were posted, while subjective questions’ scores were not posted or vice versa. “When there is a board’s mistake at any level, it refunds the re-checking fee to candidates,” he added.Dawan News,
